Every Easter, This Greek Island Goes To War

On the Greek island of Chios, an annual rocket war is held during the midnight mass of Easter Sunday. The island’s two rival churches launch tens of thousands of rockets with the goal of hitting the other church’s bell tower. Local tradition dates the origin of the practice to the Ottoman era, when real cannons were used until the Ottoman’s prohibited them. As a result, the locals used homemade rockets instead. The result is a crazy night of fireworks like you’ve never seen before.
