These Surfers Dug Trenches On The Beach And Created Their Own Waves

Every winter on the North Shore of Oahu, large ocean swells cause the rivermouth of the Waimea River to be damned up with sand. This results in flooding up river during heavy rains when the water can’t flow out to the sea. Eventually, the river will naturally breach but every year, local conservationists will dig out trenches to relieve the flooding and when they do this, they make their own waves, drawing in locals for a fun surfing session.
