After a really long gap, Hyosung made a comeback to the Indian quarter-litre motorcycle scenario in 2012. The Comet was their first offering in India many years ago, all thanks to Kinetic Motors. The company is back – this time being lead by Garware Motors. The fully-faired sports bike – the GT250R – aims to take the fight to contenders like the Kawasaki Ninja and Honda CBR250R.
Engine
Packed neatly within the frame is a 249cc, twin-cylinder engine that produces 28bhp and 22.07Nm of torque. The motor is oil-cooled and comes paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Hyosung GT250R is BSIV-compliant.
Specifications
The GT250R looks very identical to its larger sibling – the GT650R. At the front, it boasts of a vertically-stacked headlamp cluster, a sloping nose with a large visor and two intake vents on either side. The tank is huge and muscular and the side fairing is sleek with some cuts and slashes. The wing mirrors are simple to look at. It has an up-swept tail section with a high-set seat and an LED tail light. It also gets split grab rails. The exhaust and the fat tyres give it a proper big-bike stance. On turning on the ignition, the needle does a full swipe of the tachometer. The instrument cluster includes a digital speedometer that show information like engine temperature, dual trip meter, time and fuel level. There are also pass-by, turn-indicator lights, high-beam along with FI malfunction indicators. It also features adjustable foot-pegs. In terms of dimensions, the GT250R is 2090mm in length, 700mm in width and 1130mm in height. Power delivery isn’t very satisfactory, and the engine is rather gruff. Vibrations can be felt as the revs rise. And the gearbox isn’t particularly smooth. Acceleration isn’t as quick as we’d expected it to be. At 188kgs, the bike’s weight is manageable. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 155mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1435mm and a seat height of 830mm.
Mileage
The Hyosung GT250R has a fuel tank capacity of 17 litres. In terms of mileage, the bike is capable of returning 30kmpl by ARAI, in BSIV guise.
Mechanical Parts
The riding position is a little too sporty for a regular commute. The low-set clip-on handlebars make the rider lean forward too much, with all the weight on the arms. The seat is comfortable and provides sufficient under-thigh support, but overall, the ergonomics are not comfortable, making it a rather aggressive machine to ride. However, getting accustomed to the GT250R will prepare you for just about any other sports bike out there. The Shinko tyres provide good grip. And because of the heft of the bike, the handling seems to have been affected. Changing directions in the city isn’t a cinch. And it isn’t particularly agile either. The bike stays sure-footed at triple-digit speeds, however. The brakes bite well, and ride quality is pretty good, with most bumps being absorbed without any fuss. At the front, the bike rides on upside-down telescopic suspension, while the rear gets mono suspension. As far as the chassis is concerned, it is built around a tubular frame. The GT250R runs on 110/70-17 tyres at the front and 150/60-17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.
